Ok, I'll make another stab at relevance here. If you think of Gal Civ as a Naval Sim, then all of the planets are tiny islands on a water world. The best you can do is defend a radius around the island, as has been suggested. This means that any "borders" are both mutable and imaginary. In fact, when there is a war, all of the water is hostile territory, except where shore batteries and mines, etc. can give you SOME control. A system where the control of the planets are in mult

Oh, and as to ships caught behind the lines in the war, they make best possible speed out of the territory, unless they are armed, then the player/AI has the option to attack with them. There is a one-turn protection for non-combat vessels to clear the area or be destroyed, unless it is a sneak attack, in which case, we all know how you are ... Warships and starbases are allowed to mutiny, depen

About sneak attacks and Declaration of War: I favor a graduated ZOC ruleset. For instance, at the "border" there would be a grey area, where there is a ZOC of none. If there are two ZOC in the area, then the area would have to be at least 2/3 influenced, or be grey. 3/4 for 3 ZOCs, etc. This would factor into the DOW as allowing a neutral zone or no man's land, depending on the state of war between the ships' owners. Attacks within the grey area would be an act of war, where a

I've always been more about the concepts presented in Sci Fi than the actual writing. Since reading Dosadi, I have held the notion that we should not make things easy as a society, if we want smart, capable people. Quite the contrary, making things as difficult as possible "weeds out" incompetence - in the case of Dosadi, by starvation. This is the 180 deg opposite of the Socialist way of thought. Dosadi is kind of like the ultimate Capitalist extreme, just as ugly as Communism, just in another

Must have read about a thousand Sci-Fi books in my mis-spent youth. Here's one that has resonance today and seems to have been over-looked by this thread: WWW Link "The Dosadi Experiment" (Herbert) shaped my nascent attitudes about society almost as much as "Stranger in a Strange Land" and "Dune." Oddly, while

I'd like to see range treated realistically. If you have a "range" of Z, then you can go Z turns before you have to put into port, or be within Y of a friendly planet. The Y would be a reasonable distance for ship tenders to travel from their homeworld to supply the ship. This would keep you from having massive fleets loitering at the limits of their "range" for perhaps the rest of the game. Once they run out of supplies, it could be just like the ship being out of range now - they go

I was having serious issues distingushing between my custom race colors and others. It seems to me that all of the "good" colors are taken. Also, I really didn't want to change any of the default colors. The color I chose is awful, but visible. I chose a color almost exactly between the Torian and the Arcean. This results in a kind of dilute "radiator fluid" color, but I can tell mine from all the others. It is also a high contrast with the background of space.

As far as the speed limit goes... Make the penalty for exceeding the limit be the random destruction of ships that go faster than 5. The faster you go, the more frequent the demise. If you don't want the ships to be faster than 8, make destruction virtually certain at that speed. You could make this a "structural-integrity" type of thing, requiring the research and installation of a ship component to reinforce the hull integrity (to eak out that last 2 or three parsecs/week w/o suffering destruc

Hi, I have an oddity to report with Metaverse postings. I finished a game with an Influence victory. The game asked if I wanted to post, I did. Then I replayed the last year or two and won via research. The game asked again if I wanted to post. I said yes, thinking that I'd either get a second post, or get the error message. The metaverse allowed me to over-write the first post with the second. Not what I wanted at all, as the Tech victory was a lower score. I have since tried to post the Influe

Well, I have noticed that it was a factor in keeping me from getting "close", thus preventing/delaying an alliance victory. However ... I'm not sure if it was the sole or even a significant factor as I'm still confused about what the AI "wants" from me. (Other than everything, I mean.)

I like the idea about forcing the post of all Metaverse games. How about this: There is a "current game" listing and score that is added when you LOAD a save game? That would still allow you to load a previous game w/o a "cheater" flag to correct a serious mistake. But then you couldn't start a new game until you either Retire, Win or Lose. (This might even work with multiple saved games.) This forces all Metaverse games to be counted into the score. I a
