I am an industry qualified professional software tester. I test software. I test hardware. I test documentation. I test websites. And I test processes. Maybe that's why I scream silently inside every time I come across a process that someone thinks is infallible. Well, Stardock the silent scream I have just finished is for you. You've seen my previous post about the Stardock Central Failure. Well b

Just tried using Stardock Central to get and install WindowBlinds 5. Downloading the file wb5.sdc is fine if a bit on the slow side but install is not fine as witness the log file contents posted below:- ====================================================================================================================================== -- [Application] ---------------------------------------------------- Name: S

Ok then 12 hours later and after much messing about with making and restoring disk partition images sacrificed to exposure to the problem I think I have a solution and also the cause. I'll start with the cause. The WinCustomize website is not the cause but the trigger. The cause is a rogue Firefox extension that does nothing as long as I visit websites other than WinCustomize. On accessing the WinCustomize website as described in

I tried to post a message on this very subject yesterday but it appears to have disappeared in to the ether. Not to worry because in a perverse way I feel better that someone else is thinking that spyware is originating from the WinCustomize site. In my case the spyware is WinFixer which purports to do the same thing as ErrorSafe. I am a industry accredited professional software tester currently working in an area that

Well if you are then you might just have been caught out by the same thing as I was. The culprit - well at least on the 3 PCs I've checked thus far - is ZoneAlarm. To be precise it is the new version of ZoneAlarm - version 6.0. Over the past few days the PCs I have control over have been upgraded to version 6.0 from 5.5 and somewhere along the line the upgrade process has reset the security settings for the DesktopX ite

OK go figure this. Run a weather widget as an executable - no problem changing the location. Close widget and import it as an object - cannot change the location if my life depended on it. Sometimes I even get a scripting error on line 11 of the script associated with the location. the object id is weather_location2 and the offending code line reads http.send ''. Delete the object and related objects, reload widget and

OK then, its 1450 BST on July 17, 2005 and on my laptop - which I use as my main PC these days - and on the desktop PC I'm getting the following: Server Error in '/' Application. File or assembly name zhdp21ll, or one of its dependencies, was not found. plus a load of other code similar to an earlier post in this thread. The desktop and laptop PCs are maintained independently from each other to preserve integrity i

It has become necessary for me to stop loading DX3 as Windows starts because it is chewing up resources like they're going out of fashion tomorrow. That's the headline grabbing statement, now for the facts supporting it. 1. From the moment I hit Enter having typed in my username and password with DX3 it takes 4 minutes before the desktop is useable. 2. I say useable but most of my System Tray apps have failed to start and are not

Quite right. It is best to uninstall DX2 before installing DX3. I just didn't see where SDC said I should before I clicked the Update button. Anyway to cut a long story short I am now back in business with DX3. Still a bit confused about the contents of the email from Stardock.

I just knew it was going to be a mistake jumping in to DesktopX 3.0 on the first day of release. Stardock Central tells me I can update to DesktopX 3.00.040 from 2.4x. So like a fool I did. Then I rebooted like SDC told me and lo and behold no DesktopX whatsoever of any version can be found by any of the shortcuts I have here. I can't even figure out which .exe to double click in Windows Explorer. So next port of call is via Stardock'

OK its now thanks all round to the guys with the suggestions for changing the ZoneAlarm settings. I have done as suggested and behold I now have graphics where before I did not. Of course it doesn't explain why the old site worked with the settings that the new site does not. The important thing is that the problem has been cracked. So once again thank you to everyone concerned.

I had this problem right from when the new site was put up and as has been said it still is happening. The stock answer is obviously that its not the site because then everyone would be reporting the problem. Ergo its other settings in your browser, or you are blocking images in some way like using ZoneAlarm for instance. This would be a nice try except for one thing in my case - no change of PC, settings, software and anythi

OK there's no easy way of saying this but here goes. 1. Using the release version of Firefox 1.0 browser on the old site all thumbnails in the libraries displayed fine. Using same browser, same PC and no changes whatsoever to settings, etc on the new site and said thumbnails now show as [AD]. Now [AD] is what ZoneAlarm does if it thinks it has found an advert. Please don't tell me to change the settings in ZoneAlarm beca

Nice to look at online if you've got broadband because a 1MB+ file doesn't take long to display. But just you try it with a 56K modem a few times so being able to download it just once would be nice. Well I've tried using Save target to download the PDF file and it chokes every time at 1004KB. So I'm open to suggestions.

There are lots of nice skins produced but a lot of them get the thumbs down from me for just one reason - the Favorites "menu" is unreadable compared to the other menus. What you usually get is item text in black on a light background which is readable and then when the highlight bar is applied the text stays black instead of turning a light colour like normal menus do. Yes I know that the Favorites "menu" isn't a real menu which is why I've tried to be careful with the way I'm writing

Off and on for the past 24 hours I've been trying various links to www.skinbase.org and got nothing but "Cannot find server". This is via links on the WinCustomize site, directly in to a Web browser address base and via a Google search. I'm not experienceing problems with any other sites at this time. Anybody any ideas ? <img src="http://images.stardock.com/images/smiles/sb.gif" bord

I'm very new to DesktopX but I think I can answer this one. According to the online help you use the colour they call "magic pink" otherwise known as magenta or RGB(255,0,255). It works as they say because I've just completed my very first but rather crude Zoomer object using "magic pink" for the transparent bits of the bitmaps. I used a combination of Microsoft Paint and Paint Shop Pro 6. All I need to do now is figure out how to use masks and anti-aliasing to get rid of the jaggies. Anyway hop
