Also try updating your sound card drivers, it may not seem obvious at first, but many times the sound card can cause problems. I did a quick search on your sound card and found various drivers that appeared for download after 2003, so depending on your exact model there are updated ones out there. You never know though, doing what moosetek13 said could very well fix it too.

I'm not trying to advocate multiplayer here, I have dialup which means I really can't multiplay anything, But I would like Hotseat or PBEM. My girlfriend and I play Civ4 Hotseat and my brother (who lives several hundred miles away) likes to play using PBEM (he only has dialup too). Hotseat and PBEM would be nice, but I like that the dev team is focusing on stuff that will benefit everyone. So I will be happy with whatever they decide to do.

The purple heart is when you submit 5 losses to the metaverse The racial victory is when you have at least one win with each of the races submitted The racial one was the one that took me the longest to figure out. Hope this explains it.

I just go straight for the Eye as well, as the sensor techs don't take long to research. I usually play on Huge or Gigantic maps so it really comes in handy to be able to see 15 parsecs. Plus with the Eye you never have to put sensors on a ship again, I wish you could do that for life support!

I've played Stars! I have it on my old laptop that can't run much else. Overall I think it is a great game, but it has a bit too much that you can customize and micromange for me. And I didn't find the interface as intuitive as a game like that should be, but I do like playing it.

It does make sense to be able to retreat, but you would have to create an entire tactial combat situation. Like Birth of the Federation for those of you who are star trek fans. At the moment with the current setup it would be wothless because as soon as the battle starts it's already decided, the viewer is just there for you to see what happend. But it is a good idea if there were tactical combat.
