Population growth?

So far, in -every- game I've played, I am humming along thinking I'm doing just fine, my population growing linearly, when I'll meet my first or second new starfaring race, and inevitably they'll both have an exponential population growth curve, and I feel like there's no hope for me to catch up and I give up.

What am I doing wrong? Is there some form of population management I'm missing? Am I just not colonizing enough? How good does a planet have to be to colonize?

i have this problem too, its weird but eventually if you keep colonizing their populations will stop growing and yours will be shooting up. This does tend to take a while though.

Their population curve is rather strange too, but you
can outgrow them. You should send colony ships early, because that's what they do. In the beginning, it is better to have many poor and little colonies that a few great ones.

And there are groundbreaking techs and improvement that will affect your growth. Get the love mushrooms ASAP, and when you'll be able to terraform your planets, your population will skyrocket...

I noticed the same thing... I always think I am doing well until I suddenly notice the other civilzations all have planets with a 15 billion population while my planets are 2 billion at the most.

Guess I have a lot of learning to do :)

They start out with a higher population. I may tweak this. But there are ways of catching up.
