Why you should be able to build stargates

According to the storyline of the game all the major races tore down their stargates. Having a means to teleport from one system to another could instantantly might sometimes be worth the price tag so why can't you build stargates in systems under your control.

Because hyperdrive, according to the storyline, is faster than stargate transportation. I don't think this part of the story made it into the game's storyline, but the game is actually based on a whole universe that Brad developed as a series of books, I believe. I believe that in this universe, humans developed hyperdrive which was faster (not to mention more portable) than stargates, and that's ho we maintained an equal footing in a universe full of ancient star-faring cultures.

How could stargates be slower than hyperdrive?

Stargates don't take into account the distance between two systems and hyperdrives do. Over long distances this might still be worth it.

It cost the equivalent of billions of US dollars to just use one a single time. Needless to say, they were not used often.

In fact, Hyperdrive is literally 10X faster than a star gate.

Quoted from the website on the Stargates, not sure about it being worth it to use even occasionally.

Stargates aren't wormholes.

Stargates just fold space to let ships travel between point A and point B. They aren't faster than hyperdrive. They're not instantaneous.

Stargates are biped created wormholes.

According to your earth planets primitive understanding of things that go whoosh and like wow im there, hyperdrive would be about the same time, length of journey wise as a stargate, just more choice of destination, its just that stargates are fixed point in destination and require half a planetoid to power.

Since it is all theoretical anyway, who really knows if a stargate would be faster or slower? I have not seen the technical specifications here, so I can't comment on it. However, keep in mind that you need a stargate at both ends in order for it to work at all. Therefore, hyperdrive is inherently faster because don't have to fly off to every corner of the galaxy at incredibly slow speed and then force the poor Torians to build the damn things for you! ;)

The unit of spending in GalCiv is known as the bc... billion credits. Powering a stargate would not be out of the question in game, especially between two systems under your control. Allow us to assume that stargate travel time is equivalent to that of 1 sector/month, that's pretty bad, especially after various speed enhancements. There is a benefit though... that benefit would be that the ship in motion is not going through space and therefore unassailable. The reasoning behind this is that you either go through space or you don't go through space, if you do then the stargates are less stargates and more guns and entry cussions. This would be useful in firing vulnerable ships safely through or into hostile territory, the downside would be that it takes longer. Stargates between non-aligned races probably shouldn't work. (you aren't gonna open the door to they enemy are you?)

How could stargates not be instantanious? According to the game designers stargates function by taking advantage of some flaw in space/time to bend the usual rules of distance and time.
If you're bending the rules to directly link up two remote points in space/time, ie two stargates then unless you're going to enter another universe it's not possible to spend time between the stargates. I'd imagine the stargate takes some time to create the link-up in the first place though.

I think that the idea of building stargates could be a nice one, I like it. How about if you could get into one stargate and come out in another map full of planets and other civs just awaiting for you to conquer them??? LOL LOL

Not sure this was noticed...Brad came up with this universe and this was his quote.

If stargates are'nt wormholes then they have to be instantaneous beacause there is no where for a ship to go and travel other than another universe, only possible through a wormhole. It isn't that you're leaving space just that you've modified the "rules" to make two points next to one another in this universe. A charge up perioud is possible but I'm not sure it would be distance related. Consider this.....

While the ships are carrying out some of their journey a stargate is charging up.
In that time the stargate finishes charging and upon arrival the ships make the rest by gate.

The basic point which nothing is probably going to change is Frogboy's intentions are that Stargates are always going to be the opposite of what you want. His intention is for them to work in such a way that only a stupid government would build them if they had access to hyperdrive and he is unlikely to change that. Otherwise they wouldn't probably have been torn down when hyperdrive became available, if they were instantanious and affordable hyperdrive probably wouldn't have been invented in the first place.

Hyperdrive is faster than stargate travel simply because Brad wills it so... ;)

Stargates apparently do not 'teleport' you. They just open a space corridore between two points, kind of like the gates in Cowboy bebop do.

You should probably think of it similarly to how it works in Babylon 5: ships originally required jump gates to get in and out of hyperspace, where they could move without the restrictions of normal-space relativity. As jump-gate technology improved, larger ships (and eventually almost any ship) could carry around their own "mini" jump gate to get in and out of hyperspace whenever they wanted.

In GalCiv, humanity took the StarGate technology that set you on an unalterable hyperspace trajectory, and made it into a StarDrive that could fit on a ship and be controlled and steered in real time.

Depands on the deffinition, but most define H-space as a "layer" between two universes or as the so called 5th dimension

Yet the stargates were used long before the other four dimensions were discovered. There is no hyperspace, no wormholes and thus stargate travel must me instantanious.
Hyperdrives bend space hundreds of times a minute with the effect of increasing speed far above the speed of light. Is there somekind of stargate superhighway that ships travel down between stargates. That is a wormhole.

What is the difference between bending space and folding space? Because acccoring to the website folding space is how the Stargates worked.

From what Brad has said, I always thought of Star Gates as entry points to "Slip Stream", not as the "Gating" technology that is an "instant" doorway to another portal.

So, either a Bab-5 or Bebop model is just fine by me.

And it is possible that any "gating" technology would not allow you to go faster then the Light. Merely allow you to effectively "photate" more efficently then trying to accelerate you to light speed via normal accelerants.

As for the difference in warping versus folding of space... all mass warps space. Folding implies changing dimensions. Warping implies affecting the space-time curvature beyond the normal amount that X amount of mass normally warps space (whether its more or less warping). If you UNWARPED space behind you, you'd effectively go much faster then pure thrusting would dictate. Of course, the next mass to come along would rewarp it, but hey, that's life in the space-time continuum.

Think of it as an energy grid - in theory at least :p ;p

Just a thought, even if using gates is slower and more expensive that hyper-drive, could it not be a way of getting from point to point without crossing the intervening space, this could be very valuable if the intervening space were hostile.
