Download and read the manual and strategy guide in the downloads page. They are really helpful.

Perry - did you check the answers in your previous help request? I also pointed you towards these resources.

Perry;
Basically the game is a 4X, turn-based strategy very much like CivIII in space. CivIII was my passion before GalCiv came along. ;) Many of the things being planned for CivIII:Conquests are already in place here.(i.e. Morality)
If you enjoy 4X's then you'll go nuts for this game! I highly recommend it and you will find that you will pick up the game mechanincs quickly. Mastering your particular style will take longer.
Feel free to leave any other questions here, I'll try to check back later, or more likely, someone else will jump in and answer within 5 or 10 mins.

Perry Rhodan! Great name! Do you actually enjoy the novels?
Do have a look at the strategy guide. Basically, increase spendings in the economic panel, use the bars to adjust military spendings vs. social/research, and decide on each planet which ship to build (colony ships first, then defenders or battle axes, a pair of freighters, and then frigates and transports for offense). On each planet, pick a social project to boost your planets, starting with soil enhancement.

I read Brad's examples of gameplay and I was hooked even before the game was released. Now I can't get enough of it. (I try to play when ever I can but college has it's own ideas) :(

Brad is the owner of Stardock and father of Galactic Civilizations. YOu can find his game play example here:

http://www.galciv.com/play.html

It is also located in the Encyclopedia (button at top of window)

[Thanks, Mayito, I caught it ;) ]

BTW, I've heard the term before, but what does 4X mean as a style of game?
