new feature idea

Emergency Power

You know how on some SF movies, the ship's engines can temporarily achieve 110% power at the expense of damaging the engine?

Well I figured sometimes it might be useful to be able to achieve a faster speed at the expense of some hit points. The way it would work would be a button on the interface that would activate giving the selected ship one extra movement point, but at the same time immediately subtracting hitpoints from it. (Or even destroying it if it's already damaged, which would basically prevent this feature being used successfully two turns in a row.)

I think this would be a really cool feature. Useful for a blocking maneuver during peacetime or in reaching that one extra parsec to kill a transport one turn before it invades a system, or for racing the AI that one last parsec to an unclaimed planet.

This would be a pretty cool idea...

Yes, it is a good idea. In fact, seen more technologies that give you both negative and positive impacts is something I would like to see. This way, you really do make selections on the tech-tree.

This may be a little off topic, but it seems along the same lines: I would like to see "Reverse Engineering" in some way. Maybe to quicken the path to a tech. For example: If you're lucky enough to find a Ranger wouldn't it make sense that you could achieve Ranger tech faster as your scientists look the ship over?
Just thinking.

What I'd like to see is a more specified Tech tree, so you can only choose certain branches.

at present you can over time research pretty much everything, Personally i'd prefer it if you could only get certain things at the cost of another. I.E you research one path and it cuts off another.

This would not only make the game more interresting but it would make the different cultures diverge more, atm all races do pretty much the same, but with this it would make the races a lot different.

and with this it could allow different ships, i.e you have to choose between getting really quick ships and having heavily armed ships.

"we're already at 110% on the reactor!"

"then give me 115%."
