Is there a method of playing an older version other than through Steam? I wasn't active during the key-transfer period, so I missed the boat on switching over to Steam from Epic.

Unfortunately there is not a way to do on Epic. If you were still interested in key transfer try reaching out with a support ticket via Stardocks website, I can’t guarantee anything but it’s worth a shot
