Also the negative dip consequences never seem to expire. You just always have a dip penalty. Fortunately there are so many sources of dip bonuses it doesn't really matter. Knee jerk reaction is to be conservative about the type of war, but in practice it's best to be generous, especially against tougher opponents.
I don't think they work as advertised.
If I was to defensively declare war on an encroaching enemy I would quickly find myself taking massive hits to approval just from the ship battles raising the war progress. Conversely, I could use the same war type to quickly take several planets from a weaker enemy and end the war/destroy them before the penalties kick on.
I'm not sure if this is mechanically good or bad, it's just that the flavor text for the war types is deceptive.
Personally, I'd have the war types tick up for different reasons. The first one, for example, may allow more ship-to-ship battles, but tick up quickly if actually territory is gained.
