Newb to the game in general

? re: MODS

I recently bought this game and im loving it. Playing vanilla til next check then on to entrenchment. This will give me time to learn vanilla. Now as far as mods go im on a decent laptop which more then meets the needs of this game so i figured i would get some graphics mods and avoid gameplay mods until i have the basics down. Im curious as to which graphics mods are best (Bailknights and volumetric explosions come up a lot) but they dont seem to have vanilla versions. Is there anyway i can get these for vanilla?

do you have entrenchment? if you do, it's pointless to do vanilla then entrenchment  for purposes of getting used to the game.  if you have entrenchment, start with that!

First of all, good choice about what mods to use. It's certainly better to learn standard Sins first and then move on to the gameplay mods.

Bailknight's should be for Vanilla, as it was developed before entrenchment came around. You may have to look through that mod's forum posts to find an updated version though (with the older mods often times other people have to update the mods because the original modders are no longer along, so the OP can't be changed). Also the Volumetric mod says it is compatible with Normal Sins 1.181, so I'd try that first (if I remember right the download comes with both the Standard Sins and Entrenchment versions).

ok i found it but it says i have to extract it to a mods folder in my SoaSE  mods folder yet i dont have one. Do i simply just make one?

The mods folder is not situated in the SoaSE install folder. To find out where your mods folder is, simply go to the Options->Mods in SoaSE menu.

The Volumetric mod also has a vanilla version. You can find a link here.

assuming you have sins 1.181/entrenchment 1.041,  the Mods NEED to be placed here for xp
C:\Documents and Settings\'user name'\Local Settings\Application Data\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Mods-v1.181
C:\Documents and Settings\'user name'\Local Settings\Application Data\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Mods-entrenchment v1.041

or here for vista/windows 7
C:\Users\'user name'\AppData\Local\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Mods-v1.181
C:\Users\'user name'\AppData\Local\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Mods-Entrenchment v1.041

NOTE the first two folders after the 'user name' are hidden , so to see them you must first click on 'tools' then 'folder options', then 'view', then click on 'show hidden files& folders' then click ok, then you will be able to browse your want to the folder. I suggest when you find the folder that you create a shortcut to it on the desktop

NOTE 2 the 'user name' in the above paths is your WINDOWS login user name, eg Administrator

and if the mod you want to use is from an EARLIER sins/entrenchment version place the mod in the mods folder FOR THAT version eg mods-entrenchment v1.03, then download and run my mods updater from the latest version archive which will have the same number as the vanilla sins version number, and AFTER updating the mod(s) to the current version for any mods of pre 1.04 entrenchment ALSO run the manifest maker on brush and ENTITY manifests on EACH of the mods EXCEPT total conversion mods
