Upgrading Ships

From what I see in the entity files, I'm pretty sure this is impossible, but I thought I'd ask anyways.

Is there any way to upgrade a capital ship? I'm not talking about the stats, or the model. I'm talking about actually upgrading the entire thing. I.e. version I to version II or III. I have a hack way of doing it, but I would prefer not to take up a build menu slot for each version, in case I want to include more ships later on.

The reason this needs to be done, is basically for the fighters. I'm working on a certain mod in which fighters and bombers will play a huge role. That's not a big deal in itself, but there are about 15-20 different classes of fighters and bombers (I know). Almost all of these will need to be researched to be unlocked. The problem is getting them onto the capital ships. Each race basically has two destroyers capable of deploying fighters. Each destroyer can carry four different types. That's eight total different types. The problem is, that as you tech up, you're stuck with obsolete fighters. Optimally, I would like to be able to upgrade the specific fighters on the ships, but that's definately not possible, so I have to upgrade the destroyers.

Using my current method would take up six capital ship slots per race, so Is there a way I can stack them on the build menu, and only have one of each visible at a time? Or is there another way of doing this?

You can't change the fighters a ship carries mid-game.  Sorry.  And only two destroyers per race?  What about the Sathanas and Colossus?  By the way, it might be a good time to post in the Diplomacy section and ask if there's any chance Ironclad might add the ability for fighters to have shields.

The Shivans are going to be a little bit different, and the Colossus is going to be more of a super capital ship. It'll be expensive, so it's not a main ship. As such, It'll have the best of the best in the fighter department, so no worries there.

Yes, shielded fighters would also be nice, and so would a lot of other things...

hey guys you can put shields on fighters by using a capital abititly to target them. similar to the heavy fighters on the sova. i just took the maxshield point contraint from the advent's hanger ability to do it.

you just have to give them a slight restore rate to so the shield will charge. put that in the file too

Here's the thing Avatar.  Defensive platforms can have shields without needing an ability to give them the shields.  I've made a defense platform have shields before.  However, fighters can't have shields because there is no relevant line in their entity file.  Fighters have no ability to mount shields in Entrenchment or vanilla Sins, and they have no ability to recharge shields.  I'm hoping fighters can have shields in Diplomacy because in Freespace and Freespace 2 fighters have shields, and Hoho is working on a Freespace 2 mod for Sins, and for his mod to be as close to Freespace as possible, fighters need shields.

okay never mind on that...it just give me a mini dump about 20 in the game. it worked for awhile now it just won't. i used it when entrechment first came out for a mod. don't think it will work with the updated version. oh well. sorry about that.
