1v1 Ladder

Question: How realistic would it be to start a 1v1 ladder for sins?

 Not very.

I think it'd be feasible.  There are probably enough 1v1 players out there to make it work.

Your biggest difficulty is the randomness of maps.  I'm not even talking about the random map generator (which is actually pretty bad with regards to its 1v1 creations), there's simply so much variability in militia and resources.

I tried a long while back to make a tournament and failed horribly. Though Ive been tempted to try it again. Problem was many ICO members didnt look at the fourms, and the few who did couldnt get together to do their game.

I be happy to organize another tourny if there is a demand.

Tyr attempted to make a forum one for a short time(his "call out" post).  It didn't last long.  Smurfing prevented catching some online to play an actual game and people generally prefer to play larger games rather than 1v1 so it was lower priority.  I have been interested although I tend to suck at 1v1.  I always do too much or too little econ.

You could play ladder games from a saved map. so that the militia and extractors wouldn't vary, but it seems unnecessarily complicated.

The new expansion might help if it included a 'standard' and 'random' option in setup, so that under 'standard' the extractors and militia were always the same for each different type of grav well?

Definitely.  I'm all for this feature.

We would need a bunch of custom 1v1 maps, preferably with spectator spots similar to that one that Astax made for Point Blank.

Then we would need to get set up at a game ladder site unless someone really wants to do it manually.  Here are three that might work for us if they would take us:

Are replays usable? If so you could have the players send the replay to who ever to verify the winner. To be honest, we might wanna try a simple tournament before we get set up a ladder. If the tournament goes off well then we know we wont waste our time with setting up the ladder.

They're usable, but not 100% reliable.

That might be a good idea.

The league manager would also need to establish rules for dealing with things like minidumps, lag outs, desyncs, no shows, etc.

I say Dirty if you can work your advertisment voodoo, and we get ppl really set on particpation. The rules should be easy. I think my old rules can still work. Even once we have intrest we can tweak them before the actuall tournament.

I'm down. Like to know where I rank 1v1.

I somehow imagine that out of the people who have the guts to enter a 1v1 tourny, guys like us are probably the fodder.  I have an uncanny knack of always starting 2-3 jumps from Tyr when he's on the other team, and I'm reminded every time that I still have a long ways to go...

You could do a 2vs2 and 3vs3 along side the 1vs1 For those of us who are team players.

Whats the point? 1v1 is so so boooorrringgg

And watching a long confusing 5v5 game where you don't know half the time who is on who's team... Only made worse when someone goes "oh use team colours" and everyone refers to each other by their colours :P

Seriously though, a competitive 1v1 ladder could be very good for this community and would help show what some of the best do to excel on all fronts :D

Thing is, I'm not much of a 1v1 player; I just don't find it to be all that interesting though I wouldn't mind watching other people playing 1v1's in spectator spots.  To make this happen, someone needs to step up and try to organize it.  Perhaps a 1v1 tournament (not an ongoing league, just a tourney that could take place over a single day or weekend) could be organized for starters.

If most people would prefer 2v2, then a 2v2 tourney could be organized.  That might actually be easier in that 2v2 means having fewer teams to manage.

I would work these tourneys like this.  Announce that there will be a tourney on a certain day or weekend and then invite people to sign up for it, perhaps the first eight teams of 2 players for 2v2.  (That's it, tourney's closed, we have our 8 teams.)  Then schedule them to play matches against one another.  I guess it could be organized as a one-map elimination bracket.
