GalCiv FAQ - Initial Attempt

A few questions are starting to repeat with increasing regularity. If you see a question recurring, could you post to this thread with the question and the answer? The goal is not a strategy guide, but a simple condensation of non-obvious GalCiv knowledge

For example:

Q: When I set my social project to "Nothing" what happens to the money being spent on social on that planet?

A: Right now that money disappears (not spent on other planets or military/research on that planet). There are various strategies for dealing with this, such as rush buying what you need when you don't need social improvements on most of your planets. This issue has been explored in excruciating detail in the forums and is being revisited in the expansion pack.

Q: Why is there a skull on one of my systems in a sector that I culturally dominate?

A: If a system previously met the criteria for flipping to another culture, it gains a skull. If the criteria are met again it will flip. Once a Human system gets a skull, it does not go away, even if your system is no longer culturally threatened.

I had NO idea that the skull didn't go away! Are you 100% sure? That would explain a scenario in one of my games! BLAST! :)

Your FAQ should be added to the Fansite list in the Encyclopedia. Might make more sense for contributions to this thread to be added to your FAQ.

Anyone interested in writing brief answers to:

How does the scoring system work in 1.05.71?

How can I stop the AI from asking me for more money than I have?

Can you steal techs if you have a high enough espionage rating?

How can I stop the AI from asking me for more money than I have?
End of quote

one of the best ways is to simply have a big enough fleet that they ai can't invade without it thinkning it will suffer heavy losses. so a fair number of offensive ships and your basic defenses. overall you should be fairly high on the military ranking list.

a fun way is to bribe other nations to take down the ai bully. especially their major training partners. if you can get a lot of them to do it at the same time it can save cash over the long run, and make a fun show as all his money disappears and his ships go boom.

Can you steal techs if you have a high enough espionage rating?

It appears that minors can steal tech using espionage, but majors cannot . . . yet (Expansion pack?). Continued spending on espionage gives you up-to-date stats on your enemies (and friends) and info on what tech they are researching.

Q: I cannot find the beta of the expansion pack when I go to Stardock Central.

A: You must have a drengin.net subscription, not just have purchased GalCiv itself. If you have a drengin.net subscription, make sure you have "show pre-release versions" checked under the View menu in Stardock Central.

You can use bribes to keep the AI from attacking you *if* you have a very high diplomatic rating.
