You may call me mad...

...but out of boredom and just to see what happens I just installed galciv on a computer that I had put together out of old trash they were thowing out at the office. It has a Pentium somewhat with 440MHz, 128MB Ram, and at least on a small Map, galciv is running smoothly without trouble. :HOT:

How well does a Gigantic Map work? :)

Seriously, the actual metric requires a Medium Map - not too small to be excessivly cramped, while not too large to bog down the computer...

Also, the medium map is a good balance between tactics and expansion - meaning that it should be one of the more common map sizes.

I finished a small map without any trouble.
I just started a medium one, and so far it's going fine. :)

I play sometimes on my 266 laptop. I have deleted all the sound and video files, but with that proviso, it plays fines on medium and smaller maps. (Takes a while to open the game or load a save.) (It does have lots of RAM though.)

It plays FINE on my pii400 256 meg ram 8meg ati ragepro video card.

I'm offended. You put together a computer from peices of trash and it rivals my own system :sniff!:

Medium map is slowing down, but only a tiny little bit. I doesn't really disturb me - it's still only seconds I have to wait sometimes, never minutes like with some other 4X games. :)

Great topic - not many users have mucho dough to have latest and greatest machines....

I just upgraded from my 200MMx to 2.2GHz - old workhorse saw me through some great games.... :p

Well, I'm running it on a p2/450 with (gasp) 64 megs of ram. The only annoying thing is it hangs for a couple minutes when quitting, but the wait between turns isn't too bad, even on medium. Better than Moo3 at least, I always had to bring a book when playing that. I did try a gigantic map on galciv one time, but I took one look at the map, and quit. I'm a gutless wonder. LOL

So, who thinks I'm mad, then? Come on!

(quack starts shadow boxing) :)

I, on the other hand, have a half-way decent system. I got a 700 MHz P3 with 512 Mb ram and a nice 64 Mb graphics card. The game does very well on all but the bigger maps. On huge, it can chug a little between turns. On gigantic, it is real noticeable. Being a person with little play time, I have never finished a gigantic map because of the delays. So I can only be classified as mad for the purposes of this thread if I played gigantic to the end.

The suprising part is that this over 3 year old system can still handle most games coming out. Unless I want to get stupid and run something real graphics intensive, my computer still serves me quite well.

I can hardly imagine what games the more modern systems have trouble with. It seems like games are no longer overdriving processing power like they did 5 years ago or so. Now, a fast chip (say 2 GHz), a memory upgrade and a better graphics card should do the trick nicely instead of replacing the whole system.

One reason why I like being able to play galciv on Frankenstein (I gave this name to my computer because it was put together from parts of dead computers ;) ) is that I tried the same with civ3.... waaaaaah... in the endgame, the computer needed about 10 minutes to do his turn.

I second that. Although my dedicated gaming PC could probally run 4-5 instances of GalCiv with a gigantic map at once without even a seconds lag, my dear favorite sentimental PC (P2/266 256mb ram) that I boot quite often to play the 'oldie but goodie' games runs GalCiv at a very tolerable rate...but I am a patient person :) But despite my gaming power, I cant win a game to save my ar$e....its fun trying though.
