RTS Anaylisis Sum : EAW/FOC vs SINS (7dsins)

Which is better in mhop

Hello Community,

I have recently been reviewing 7 deadly sins and Emire at war (especially the french strategy mod in waiting for the release of Nomada's 2.2 allicance mod) and felt like writing a review of the two games. Many have acclaimed SINS as being the RTS of all time, and I felt commentatin on the subject was due since I have offered suggestions to both mods and wish well equal success to both modding teams (danman games and Nomada_Firefox Alliance 2.2).

First off, Danman's 2.0 release of 7DSins is extordinary, compared to the original release of SINS, it ads much more depth and diversity since it adds a number of new races who all play uniquely. The visuales are extrodianay, and the game play is very dynamic in strategy, since every different race plays unique to the others (especially love the rogues, feel they offer the greatest challence next to the altlantians). Overall, I give the mod a 7/10, I feel the unique game play and the number of choices amogst races is great for replayability.

I still feel that that Empire At War is a better game, and do not understand why so many feel that SINS is so much better. Sure, Vanilla EAW/FOC sucks, I admit that. But, the French Strategy Mod, and especially Nomada's Alliance Mod far outshine SINS in all repect IMHO.

From what I have noticed, playing both, playing 7 Deadly Sins is limited to playing the game only on High Graphics. This is OK in my opinion, but I have a high end computer, capable of playing most games on ultra settings, and when playing 7ds only on high, it annoys me that planets and bulidings look fuzzy on high, and when set to ultra, the mod crashes.

I am capable of playing the French Strategy Mod and Alliance 2.1 on Hign/Ultra graphics without any problems, and the visual detail is much more astounding. Also, the game play just feels more in depth playing EAW than playing SINS. Sure, SINS takes longer, and and all the upgrades and real time stragegy are exciting, but i just feel that playing EAM/FOC feels more real, especially since it includes building ground bases and forces that add a missing dynamic to the genre. After playing both, I still feel that that all the special abilities that are presented to each unique ship in EAM/FOC, and all different types of ships that are allowed to be constructed after capturing particular planets in each of the mods make EAW/FOC much more dynamic than 7DSins. With the addition of hero units and sub-hero units w/speciallized abilites, I feel that EAW/FOC is the winner of the ultimate 4X space genre game, since every galactic conquest of EAW/FOC requires not only fleet domination, but also space exploration to find new heroes, research to unlock new abilities, ground combat skills and fortification, and constant upgrades/fortifications to ensure proper defenses to succeede as well as constantly upgrading/building your spacestation/defenses to reach victory.

SINS is fun over all, but with the poor mondane diplomacy, and with the over all simplistic race of capital ship power vs technologial advancement, I still feel that certain mods for EAW/FOC provide a much more visually entertaining/more in depth strategy than SINS can ever provide.

I welcome all thoughts and challenges to this topic, for I am writing this in interest of what the rest of the community feels.

Having played both EAW/FOC and SOASE and their respective mods, I mostly disagree with what you've said. Let me lay my cards on the table: I'm a huge Star Wars fan and enjoyed EAW/FOC. (Hell, I even thought Rebellion was awesome.) However, it's relatively simplistic -- even in Firefox's mod, which I couldn't stand for other reasons -- in its strategic model, especially its economy and research models. Multiple resources, branching tech-trees, universal upgrades are all lacking. Some of these are possible to be partially-implemented through moding, but not well. One benefit of EAW/FOC is that it does tie fleet cap to the number of planets held. This would be nice to implement in SOASE.

As for EAW/FOC's advantages, ground combat is a plus, but unfortunately the combat engine isn't very responsive (compare it with other RTS engines, eg. SAGE, etc.). It would also be difficult to realize in a fully real-time environment like Sins. While it's true that EAW/FOC do offer more in the way of galaxy customization, the emphasis in SOASE is on mirrored maps and competitively-balanced rather than fictionally-accurate maps. Both offer different experiences. If you want an engaging single-player campaign, then of course, EAW/FOC is the better option, but in terms of what it does offer, SOASE is much better in its execution.

Oh, and EAW/FOC is nowhere near the "ultimate" 4X space game. That would be Master of Orion 2. :P

I'm the first to admit Sins diplomacy sucks donkey balls, I hate it, but that's probably the only thing you have right in your entire post.

Mods do help EAW a lot, but you're comparing two games released in different years based only on their mods.  FOC was in the bargain bins by the time Sins came out.

I'll avoid dishing on the two mods you listed since I haven't played either of them, but of the mods I played a year or two back, which is a more applicable time frame for the current Sins mods out, there is no comparison.  The Zerox mod did add a whole bunch of ships, structures, and heroes.  There was definite improvement to the shitty game underlying it, but to even attempt to claim that EAW was the best because of the Zerox mod would have made me look like a lunatic.  It may be tolerable with the mods, but the underlying game is seriously flawed.  Adding oodles of units just increases the lifespan, and the lifespan of EAW without them is about the time it takes to beat the campaign.

Maybe the alliance 2.1 mod has made EAW into an actual good game instead of a short lived diversion, but you're comparing apples and oranges.  7DS is a barely there beta at this point, just look at his forum post with all the plans versus what's actually been implemented.  It's been three years since EAW was released, come back and compare the modding communities in two more years.
