Outgunned, Out-teched, any hope?

I've been trying to play "Challenging" games with the intelligence of all other races set to Bright, but I always seem to wind up in the same situation - after the race for systems, the 2 biggest, best races declare war on me and reduce me to rubble with their Battle Cruisers, then Battleships when all I have are Axes and Frigates.

Any suggestions? Any hope at this point?

Try to have at least as many Systems as the biggest of them has. Keep the Tax-Ratio low enough that your pop grows as fast as theirs (usually 30-40%).

Get "Trade" as fast as possible and send Freighters to your friends or the minors. That's the most important thing, otherwise you could forget it.

Beeing good also helps to keep peace at least with the other good guys.

Try to get tradegoods, they sell good and help you keep up in research. Trade techs, even if you give more than you receive but never try to trade for Ship-Type-techs.

I disagree on the tax setting. In the early game keep taxes pretty high. You can always lower it later and you need the money now.
Some ways tod a bunch of fighters, corvets, or AMMs to jack up your military rating, so they are will not atack you. Get those two big races to atack each other or if you can't do that then get eveyone else to atack them. I recomed getting some trade goods asap. You can get all the war declarations/tech/money you need with them.

For what do I have the 1000 BC at the start? I use these up while letting my Taxes at roundabout 50% and slowly lower it to 39.

I've tried the other way aswell but just to find me beeing way behin in Population...
