Texture programs

Ok, so the only modding I have done is changing a few lines in text files and I would like to try my hands at modeling. I like most of the ships in the game but like alot of you I would like to see others in it. My question is, what is a good texture editing program. I downloaded a trial of photoshop but it wouldnt open dds. files. Is there an inexpensive program that will open both formats. I don't know if I will like modeling or not and don't want to spend a fortune on a program I won't use anymore. Also, is it possible to modify the existing ships. I was pondering resizeing some of the ships and even had an idea of modding the shape of a Kol and making is smaller to fill a destroyer type role.

I hear Gimp is good free image editor. Though i havnt tried it myself.

You need to download the Nvidia dds plugins for photoshop to edit dds.

not true... I used this prog to convert dds to tga

He said he was using a trial version of photoshop. So i pointed him to the Nvidia plugins. Yes there are tons of other programs that can convert to dds. Irfan View is one of them. You just have to google it up.

However if you dont mind paying the money Photoshop is the best program IMO.

We use Photoshop and save out DDS and TGA.

Oh yeah Photoshop is great.

But I am all about having as much free software as I can get :)
