How does "expenses" differ from "maintenance"?

I am attempting to examine the "overhead" costs for my planets.

I note that, often, the "expenses" for a planet exceeds the "maintenance" cost for the planet, even if no credits are being spent on propaganda, and nothing is being built on that planet. The "maintenance" costs are itemized, but what is "expenses"? I wish to lower them, but can't without knowing what they are.

Thanks

The difference is coming from your slider bar settings for Military Production, Social Production, and Research and how they relate to your Spending slider located above them. What you are doing is effectively deficit spending: pumping money into these areas to get more-than-expected returns at a cost to your net gains. The maintenance cost is a fixed factor (relative to your infrastructure, of course), but the remaining expenses can change dramatically depending on how you have your sliders set.

The way you lower them is by lowering globally your overall spending. You can't lower them on a planet-to-planet basis.

Ah, yes, thanks. I noticed that "Social Production" and "Research" are considered to have expenses (which are stated), and that the total of the Military Production, Social Production, and Reasearch expenses, and the maintenance costs of the various improvements, does add up to the total expense for the planet. I had thought that "expense" was an overhead amount, but, it includes overhead (maintenance) and production. Thanks!

To see your maintenance expenses, lower your spending bar to zero, then you will see how much each planet costs to maintain.

Don't forget to set your slider bar back up to where it was, otherwise you won't build anything (but your cash will accumulate fast).
