Sega (now of Sega-Sammy Holdings) has been hit with some hard times, forcing the company to close down a Korean subsidiary and abandon plans to construct a new $330 million arcade complex outside of Tokyo, Japan. According to Bloomberg the firm had been trying to acquire 10 acres of land for the facility, spending some $227 million on land already.
While Sega's home console and PC business remains healthy, the other side of the coin, Sammy, has seen its core market of pachinko and amusement center businesses taper off. The closure of the Korean subsidiary and abandonment of the new facility are part of a “global business optimization” that the company is currently undergoing.
Land is certainly at a premium over there.
