Once A Home

If you've never heard
the floor creak beneath your feet
you've never risen before 6 a.m.
for work,
your apartment,
your home,
your room aches and moans,
but still arises with you.

Even when we
pound its walls,
slam its doors,
and drag heavy furniture down its halls.

Until in total disregard,
we change our address,
with little respect
for how these boards and nails will take the news.

If you've ever taken the time,
to hear your home ache,
you know its hurting,
and you've taken the time
to acknowledge when it became a home.

How long you'd been there,
how long you'll stay,
how many times you'll rearrage each room,
in however many ways.

We creak and moan
carrying those, who,
throughout their day,
won't acknowledge our existence,
let alone share their appreciation.

But burn down when they're not around,
smash to pieces from strong ocean or prairie winds,
let go under the weight of age and abuse,
and they'll never again take so much for granted.

Thank you... my off-white walls,
my deadbolt,
my plastic clacking drapes,
my faded carpet,
my poorly ventilated moldy bathroom,
my old wiring and drafty windows my walls, ceiling, and the floor creaking beneath my feet.

Thank You,
Suspeckted

I LOVE THIS POEM!!!

It makes me think of all the temporary places I've called home--tents, dorms, friends' homes, relatives, my apartment and my child hood dwelling. I know the creaks and grunts of many of these places, and often do take for granted the space the surrounds me and makes me feel secure.

However...
I am not thankful for your clanking blinds.

Great poem, Suspeckted.
Ah...home...its creaks and moans are its own language...its reasuring words that become so familiar.
Whether it be mansion, humble house, flat, tent or box.....they all attach themselves in our memories and hearts and a material object becomes a part of our emotional existence.
