Start Position Determines Outcome?

Hi All,
One thing that I've noticed is that your start position pretty much determines the outcome of the game in all teh games that I've played.
Granted I've only finished about 4-5 games so far but it really seems like if you get a good initial position that it's hard to lose and if you get a poor one that it's very hard to win. The system placement issues are close to insurmountable.
Yes, yes I know the strategy of getting colony ships early by leasing and using starbases to increase range so that your colony ships can reach stars faster but doing that (especially the starbase part) can be totally crippling.
Possible solution would be to make the star systems more spread out. I typically play with loose clusters but maybe scattered is a better thing to do.
Also - maybe making the initial range on colony ships larger would solve this.
Do people find the same thing? Was curious to hear what others thought of this.
