Has anyone noticed that when you start a new game all your opponents are right next to you even if you've got a gigantic map only this always happens to me and its getting really annoying.

I have noticed that too, I hate having the enemy just next door.

I have seen it happen both ways. Perhaps it is truly random. If it gets too bad, perhaps
when they start work on the smoothing of the game there might be a little added to
reduce the chance that pure randomness makes the game unacceptable to some.

I've only started two games, but in one I was right in the middle of several other empires and in the other I had the most breathing room of anyone else in the galaxy. YMMV,

It is random right now, but we are going to fix it so that everyone starts with some breathing room.
