Im a noob, help me with economy pleeeeeeeeeease

ok i suck. whenever i play a game, i plummet in to scary red numbers at frightening speeds...eventually anyway. only way i can stop this is by lowering government spending to like 10%, and then my planets dont have enough funding to do anything useful.

also my other problem is with morale. i cant keep it high!!! it always drops...

what am i doing wrong?

In the .049 patch morale really shouldn't be a problem.

This is how I start the game. I put social construction to zero. Gov spending to 100%. Taxes to ~75%. (Revenue at this point is about +3bc) I buy one colony ship on a long lease. The rest I build from scratch. Sol should be able to put one out every 5 turns. I put ~200mil colonists in each transport. When they land I have them build one transport then constructors. By not getting leases this keeps my money up, and Gov spending at 100%.
As far as social projects go. I never build more than an entertainment center for moral. I build (in no particular order) soil enhancement, habitat improvement, banking center, manufacturing plant, fusion powerplant, economic exchange, stockmarket on every planet.
I always rush to research impulse drive (I play huge galaxy). After I get that I put social spending back to 33%. By this time you are probably losing 5-7bc per turn. Don't worry about it. You still have all of your money since you only got one lease.
Your first constructor should be out about now letting you find the galactic resources. When your treasure drops to ~50bc you probably need to put gov spending to get you a small pos. income.
The interesting thing about taxes is that as long as you are producing lots of stuff, expanding, at war, or have lots of influence your approval rating should stay high so you don't need to worry about lowering below ~60%. I don't know if this helps you at all, but it is a start.

This will get you started till you get the hang of the game, it is not intended as a guide for normal gameplay.

First start a game in the smallest galaxy with plenty of habitable planets on the easiest level and one AI to get you started.
Take 15% PQ and something else as abilities.

When in the game proper ctrl-n till you get a good starting location with 2 or more 20+ planets and maybe a resource

Then set your taxes at 50% and your spending at 100%.
You will lose money

Set your military to 80%, social at 20% and research at 20%

Move your first colony ship to the nearest good planet and run your survey ship around picking up anomalies.

Set Earth to make colony ships (should do one every 3 turns) only load about 200 and soil enhanchment at first. Research yellow up to Uni Translators.
At this level don't worry too much about weapons yet, your survey ship should pick up enough goodies to keep up in military.

Any new planets set to make constructors or ONE scout and soil enhancement.
Use the constructors to make a starbase in your earth sector on resource if thereand build upresource and mil and soc prod first.

Keep colonizing 15+ planets 14 is good with 15%PQ but get them later. Keep churning out colony ships and constructors.
Research Green for next +PQ or red and purple up to defenders. Build colony ships till all planets are taken or range is a factor. If a juicy planet is just beyond range send a constructor to sector nearby and build a single unit starbase to extend range. Constructors have 1 greater range than colony ships.

Build zero maintenance projects and only +morale when needed or when you are established.

Once your money is near 100 cut back spending.
DON'T lower taxes to correct low morale, if you do you will overpopulate your planets and start a nasty cycle.
Get trade routes going. Even if you can't see a far off partner you know they are there make freighter at first chance and send to far corners blindly.

By this time you will have the hang of the game and are ready to discover what it offers and to enjoy it.

Add: once the colonizing phase is over set mil/soc/research to 34/33/33 or wherever you think they need to go.

Research and build trade projects and sell them to minors for cash.

well have you tried the fediralist party?they are especaly good with the green(money).Banking centers early will help your cause and they are rather cheap if you have proper spending to them.econimy capitals although expencive will dramaticly help as well so build them in your highest income planet.buy a colony ship first thing when you start.in my experience it helpss alot and the soil enhancement helps alot too.remember the higher the planet number the more efective.in the dinky book that comes with the game it tells ya flat out that 15 + planets are best.as for morale entertainment networks are good in early stages.but the morale in my opinion is somewhat efected by the planet number. i think distance from other planets efects morale too but not sure.hope this helps.

ya, in my last game i played when i got to terror stars in the tech tree, i was the federalist party and STILL was losing money every turn, with only the default 50% government spending.

In the screen with all the starting options are abilities, in a new new game they are preset and in a new game are set to last settings. Click around there and you will pop a window (I'm at work so don't have game active now). Anyway in the window you can uncheck and check abilities and % of them with 10 available points. You must uncheck some first to get points to check something else.

As you see there are various ways to start up. They are all good. This game will snap in after playing a bit, you'll see.
