After pumping countless constructors, my starbase is just a piece of fancy junk !

Like, really, constructors take for ever to build, they're slow like snails....And after pumping lotsa them into a starbase, and focusing on the military upgrades in offense and defense only, (and after researching and installing planetary defense) and after having swarms'o ships in lower orbit I found my homeworld rather...vulnerable...it's not worth it...
One would think that after working for years and spending a fortune on one spacestation, well, one would think that the so-called spacestation is worth more than its weight in scrap metal....

To conclude...constructors too expensive and slow to make, or bonuses gained too small...

you should not forget to upgrade the economic and mining portions of a starbse, especially in a system with multiple colonies. the cumulative bonuses willhelp you crank out constructor like there is no tomorrow. also you have to improve your economy and trade income so that you have a lager manufacturing base. IMO, you should only upgrade the military and defense parts when you are preparing for a war or you are falling behind in military ratign and you have races threatening you. The production bonuses from the economic amd mining bonuses are far more important in the early going.

Not sure which game you're playing. I held out against a much bigger dregnin fleet by hunkering in a system with military bonuses in it's starbase and watching as his frigates died in vain trying to kill my battle hammers. I think the bonuses are fair fot the cost, and don't forget, you're not limited to just 1 starbase in a sector.

well, I like to have specialized starbases rather than mixed ones. Research and Build in crowded systems, trade and cultural along the trade routes, in foreign quadrants, and in the homeworld sistem, a big slab'o steel with lotsa guns...the research and trade stations are satisfactory but the war station is a total deception. Like, TOTAL ! I was expecting a lot more...

hold on...you mean that if I have more starbases, the bonuses will ADD ? (well, duh ! *smacks himself with a piece of space debris*)

now, why didn't I thought of that ?...(guess too much beer DOES damage one's braincells, afterall !)

really? i've won wars because of a strategically placed military starbase. a fully decked out military SB gives +12 attack, +1 defense. if you can't slaughter everything that comes into your system with one of those then you're probably screwed.

cheers

Also, I think that most of the bonuses in the Defense section, only apply to the Defense ratio of the Starbase itself, whereas the the military options will increase ship attack and a defenses(only 1 or 2 for defense i think). But, I could be wrong ;)

Especially for a home sector starbase, it really helps to max out the mining and econmic bonuses , as that really cuts down the time factor in construction of military and social projects, and the total bonuses in military and defense really help keep you alive. In a recent game I got ganged up on by the Drengin, Yor , and Arcean empires. I had my maxxed out starbase, Battelstation mk3 level and +12 def, hold off about 10 waves of multiple attacks by battleships and dreadnaughts before 15 rounds of cumulative damage destroyed it. This was only One starbase and I didnt have any outside military bonuses.I was albe to build it up quickly due to cutting my constructor production time down to 2-3 turns with all the mining an ecomnomic bonuses I had put on that starbase 1st

In the military modules it also has bonuses for ship defense. the defense modules are for the starbase itself

well, I really suck at strategy games (I like RP) but this game is too good to ignore...I just HAVE to play it...even tho 3 AI's at Idiot level wipe the floor with me....

I know where my fault is...being used with party RP games I tend to care for each and every individual...In strategy games I guess you just can't go crying your eyes out every time you lose a scout...so I try to put my ships is sure-to-win situations only, thus I play too slow and waaaaay too defensive....but, as I said, this game is too good to ignore...

I thought military bonuses were the only thing that wouldnt accumulate in the same sector with multiple starbases?

"In strategy games I guess you just can't go crying your eyes out every time you lose a scout"

Probably not a good idea, since it's gonna happen. :)

A home-sector base with lots of military upgrades, combined with a fleet that you keep in your home sector, can also serve as an effective deterrent from attack. That's what I did in my last game. I built a home-sector starbase and maxed it out on pretty much everything I could. I also built up a huge armada of corvettes, battle-axes and battle cruisers and kept them in the home sector. I had no intention of going to war - I was playing for a tech victory, which I did get :) - but the combination of the starbase and the big home-sector fleet probably did keep the Drengin away from my systems when they attacked the Yor planet that was also in my home system. In the second half of my game this Yor planet was under pretty frequent attacks by Drengin dreadnoughts, but they never bothered to go after any of my systems which were much more tempting targets.

You can get through a game without ever losing a single unit. One of the things I thought was really neat about this game is that on my first game, I set all the AIs to sub-normal, and followed my usual Civ strategy of build up, wait for someone to attack you, obliterate them until you run out of units, make peace, repeat. It didn't work, because even at that level, the AI was smart enough not to start a fight if they would just get crushed :)

Do more than one starbase in the same sector actually do anything? What's to prevent you from getting infinite bonuses by building starbase after starbase in your home sector?

Best defense for a home base sector is distance!!! If you play on Gigantic galaxy and have a home base in a corner, you dont need to protect it at all :/ I still keep ships incase fo some stupid rebellion like the damn event that made me cry last ngiht when my best level 49 planet formed some sort of a coalition agianst the evil and left with 100 billion people!!!! Dear god I would never capture that back I jsut stopped playing, it had every capital you could concieve and it could make any trade good in 3-5 turns :( My favorite planet why the treachery WHY!!!!! :sniff!: (:(

Astax,

I've been playing in small sized galaxies. You better have your home sector defended... the Drengin will be attacking you pretty fast.
