Yes to all the above. Use constructors to build star bases and levels in the starbase for production, etc. Also use them to grap resourse.

I will occasionally use them just to extend range, but as PB said, yes to all of the above.

Try to answer a few comments.

The cntr-n, cntr-u trick is cheese.

Yes cranking out masos it not for everybody, I am also doing something else while I am playing. :)

I use constructors for all of the above but mainly for extending range. Once I have diplomatic relations with everybody and maxed out on trade routes I build no ships.

The AI I set to friendly.

If you don't like that particular cheese, just open the trading window where you can see your trade routes or all trade routes, and you can see that the AI are colored in faintly in that graphic. You can also see the minors as well.
