So if you encounter any problems updating GalCiv from Stardock Central or downloading it via our website, post here. We'll be watching this like a hawk.

I purchased galciv tonight (Australian time) and tried to use the link provided to download the zipped version. This kept generating server reset errors so I gave that up. I then used the other link in my purchase confirmation email to download stardock central. This failed once but on my second go I was able to download it. I have been trying to download the main 84 mb module but it keeps failing to download one file. The relevant log extract is below:

Downloading: C:\Program Files\Stardock\SDCentral\temp\Base\Gfx\Weapons.md_
Result: Failed (incorrect file size)
Installation aborted (failed)

I have tried this seven or eight times using both of your servers but the download always aborts while downloading this file (it is not at the exact same point in the download each time). Four hours of this is pretty discouraging as you can imagine. I have a good cable connection and normally don't have download problems. Any suggestions?

I'm still running into the same problem. When I tab to Drengin.net, the minor patches are not listed. I've set it to check for applications on startup, and I've also refreshed application data.

Well, don't know what you did with the new exe. file, but once I loaded it, then I was able to d/l the Bonuspack without a problem. Thanks - if that was what did it! :)

What size is the update??? 85 megs. SDC shows me as installed 1.01.029 and availabe 1.01a.034. So the patch is a load of files including things like :

DREADNOUGHT, etc...

And the name is: GALACTIC CIVILIZATIONS

Thanks Frogboy
Reinstalling of galciv and stardock central solved my downloading update problem. As a librarian that reboots and troubleshoots computers all day, I should have known better. Your quick response is remarkable to say the least. Some new tech discovery so you do not need sleep?
Thanks again for all your hard work.

Just wanted to post a good news story to give the devs a bit of credit... I achived all the components, burned the zip files to a cd, took it home, installed it... then went online and got the lastest version... all using SDCentral. Everything went perfectly! Thanks guys!

. .. and now back to the bad stories.

After much difficulty in downloading the core files I am having similar problems downloading the multimedia files through Stardock. About 44% have downloaded but one keeps on failing (for about the 12th time).
The log report is:

Files\Stardock\SDCentral\temp\Mod_Multimedia\movies\Conquest_Win_End.bi_
Result: Failed (incorrect file size)

So far I have chewed through about 550mb of my monthly bandwidth to get about 1/2 of this game. Help!!! What can I do to more reliably download? Why might Stardock be giving me so much trouble when I have no problem reliably downloading pretty much anything else off the net?

G'day Tim,
I am in Melbourne and have successfully downloaded the game (after some issues!!). But now playing fine!, if it is OK with Frogboy maybe he could put you in contact with me to get a copy. I don't want to post my e-mail address on the forum but he will have access to yours and mine. It might be worth the time? What do you think Mr Frogboy? :notsure:

Tip: I just downloaded the update. It took about 10 seconds. If you right click the highlighted line "version 1.01 etc...") you will see that you can hit "Ctrl+P" for "download install" and "Ctrl+D" for "download and archive". Frogman says to AVOID the archive, or you will get all 85MB. I chose "Ctrl-P". Now it may just be that the reason people are getting 85MB downloads is because they hit "update" and the DEFAULT is "Ctrl-D"! (Can Frogman confirm?). So play safe, use "Ctrl+P".

I can sympathise watching the miserable percentage downloaded figures on my PC. I've now given up though I do appreciate the efforts by Stardock. However the fact is that the infrastructure in the UK at least ain't up to it. I registered interest in broadband but my local exchange won't be upgraded for a while and even one-way satellite is more than I can justify. It worked well for Object Desktop due to the smaller modules, I could spend a reasonable time downloading and get something I could use. But for a something the size of GC a 56k modem usually getting 45k from my ISP just doesn't cut it. Such is life. Damn, I wanted to take part in the beta but was so busy I knew I'd have no time to play or feedback properly.
Oh well at least it means the fence will get painted this weekend. ;)
regards Rob

Methinks Australia may just be too far away (and stardocks servers a little weird, as they tend to reset the connection all the time) for Australian fans to download the game. I note that at least one local software company claims that they will have galciv in stock from April 28th and that may be the best option for some. Aussies can check out the local online stores at http://www.getonce.com.au/games.html

I got the following error when trying to update from ver 1.02.036 to ver
1.02.040, over Stardock Central.

There was an error installing Galactic Civilizations. The following Error occurred:

Downloading: C:\Program_Files\Stardock\SDCentral\temp\Base\galciv.ex_
Result: Failed(attempt 2)
Downloading: C:\Program_Files\Stardock\SDCentral\temp\Base\galciv.ex_
Result: Failed(incorrect file size)

Would you like to view the installation log file?

I am allowed the two choices of "View Log" or "Cancel". Whichever choice I pick does the same thing, effectivly nothing. No log file seems to be seen poping up.. though.. it could be there.. hidden by a SEP Field.. or something.. I dunno.. Any ideas ?

Extract File: D:\Games\Stardock\temp\Base\galciv.ex_
Result: Failed (deleted file)
Installation aborted (failed)

I get the same problem, and same error, except I am trying to update from .039 to .040.

Please forget my earlier post on update issues. Waited about 30 minutes, and the problem took care of itself. God I love windows/net-congestion/snafu's.

Oh, and since I seem not to have given the all important statement yet.

Thank you for making a great game. Much love for anyone who can come up with something that at the end of the day. After all the hours I've spent playing. I can still consider it enjoyable.

(just wrote a message concerning this in another thread - so a bit of duplicate info here).

I had the same problem (failed installation). Seems like[1] the custom datacomm protocol SD uses don't have much in the way of working error correction - instead, the error is detected when the installer tries to unpack the downloaded archive file.

It then deletes the offending file and pops up the warning which you saw.

If you retry the installation, the download manager only reloads the now missing file, and if you are lucky, the newly downloaded file won't be corrupt.

Of course, the larger the file, the bigger the odds that it will be corrupted, and the longer it takes to download it again... *sigh* - Murphy in a nutshell.

Personally, I spent about 8 hours on SDC trying to get it to work ... I finally managed to get a fairly uncorrupted download after I removed my D-Link router and connected directly (I have noticed a slightly higher packet loss (~1%) when going through the D-Link compared to using a direct connection) - you might try the same if you have something between you and the 'net.

Bw, that I spent 8 hours trying to get just a PATCH for GalCiv kinda indicates how much I LOVE this game...

[1]ie, it's my educated guess. I could be wrong, but from the high download speeds (250kb/sec in a 300ms latency connection - that's about 3-5 times what you can expect to get out of a TCP/IP connection) I belive SD uses a custom protocol on top of UDP.

I have been trying to download and install the latest update for the multimedia files (.004 to .006), but the install hangs near the end:

Extract File: C:\Program Files\Stardock\SDCentral\temp\Mod_Multimedia\Music\Unease.mp_
Result: Failed (deleted file)
Installation aborted (failed)

According to the gauge, I have downloaded the whole update, and it consistently fails at this point.

I hesitate to download the whole update again (366megs!!), and wonder if I need to uninstall what has been updated.

Suggestions?

I can't seem to update the GalCiv game itself from SDC.

I was able to update the bonus pack and the multi-media versions but I'm never offered the opportunity to update GalCiv itself. I still only have 1.01 installed. Is there any other way to update besides SDC (ie a link I can just bookmark since SDC doesn't seem to be working for me (and yes, I have alpha/beta versions turned on)

TIA

I'd like to second Jeff Powell's problem:

Extract File: D:\games\Stardock\SDCentral\temp\Mod_Multimedia\Music\THINKING.MP_
Result: Success
Extract File: D:\games\Stardock\SDCentral\temp\Mod_Multimedia\Music\Unease.mp_
Result: Failed (deleted file)
Installation aborted (failed)

Re: my download problems...

I tried deleting GC and reloading it, leaving Stardock in place. That did the trick. I don't recall seeing this in the documentation; probably should be there, though.

Delete Galactic Civilizations from the Uninstall icon in the directory, then reinstall it. Updates should work then, at least they did for me!

However, it appears the updates have introduced one or more graphical bugs on the Diplomacy screens.

Thanks! This worked for me. I get the same graphic glitches too. I also get "String not found" for the cancel button on many screens.
