Beta4D comments after lenghy play - and a strange bug

A. Bugs

1. Strange bug -

Late game after a turn all of a sudden with the planetary production button depressed I got a huge gree procuction circle (Torian) almost a quarter of the size of a fully xzoomed out huge map. I have a screenshot if anyone wants to drr it - its very strange. Looking at the three Torian planets in the area I found the following:

Geta - pop:4131 morale:20
Revenue:6bc Spending:1830445(!)

Algieba - pop:4207 morale:19
Revenue:6bc Spending:1825624(!)

Gambra I - pop:7970 morale:22
revenue:6bc Spending: (minus)-210993

gambra II - pop:3416 morale:13
revenue:6bc Spending:166059

After I saved and reloaded - it was still there
After an exit and re-start it went back to 'normal' with spending at around 6bc etc. This followed a suspiciously long couple of turns where the AI processing button stayed thinking for as long as it took me to make tea and a corned beef sandwich.
I have no idea if this bug would have impacted on the AI thinking for the Torians or the game's outcome.

2. Starship list on trade screen. I had 6 ships listed - when i removed 2 in trade teh scroll bars disapear as do two of the ships in the remaining four. If I click back offered ships back into my list the scroll bars reapear as do the two missing ships. This was infinately repeatable with 6 ships in a list when you offered 2in trade.

3. No images for minor races on pop-up's

4. I still have to 'wiggle' the mouse to centre on the next selected ship on the mini-map.

5. This has ben pointed out many times - on auto-survey starhawks etc always seem to have one turn left when they stop.

6. There is no image on the pop-up when you disband a scout, perhaps on other ships as well?

7. I had two pop-ups wuith racial pictures (Drengin's and the Torians) for which I don't know the context, which had no message just 'string not found'

8. Hyper-Threading 'seems' to get mixed up later in the game and seems to be fighting for resource resulting in different actions swapping for priority. This makes the 'Turn' button active when it isn't and certain orders seem to result in delays - such as when you click on 'senty' the game sits for 3 or 4 secs before the AI resuming activity for the enxt ship but the 'Turn' button remains active.

B. Gameplay

9. I got a new UP vote -"Should all Races exchange ALL of their research?" I woted NO of course as i was playing for a tech victory and doing quite well. I lost the vote and had to give away all my tech!!! i mean really! :( I would not have agreed to this in a million years! Surely there should be a veto option BUT a penalty (such as morale loss, other races attitudes change, trade embargo, loss of what they exchange etc)

10. I believe these events and others such as speed and research trippling are to great in magnitude. I recognise that this is to ensure that the game does not get samey, predictabe and repetative - that is to be commended, dramatic unexpected turns of events are much needed - but are these the right ones? Space-bourne plagues decemating planets across several sectors, metior strikes revolutions massive singular discoveries affecting ONE game aspect etc would be preferable to me.

11. Unless I am mistaken, when you make a fleet, at the moment all you can do with it as a group is move it. When I station a fleet and want to leave it alone for a turn, I have to hit the spacebar or the sentry button for every ship contained in the fleet. Fleets should behave in my view like single ships for this type of group control unless you break up teh fleet or click on a single ship from the ship list.

12. In terms of some of the comments about gameplay ballance changing. I always play bumb and huge maps and at this level the ballance does not seem to have noticeably changed for this beta.

Other minor problem .. when have multiple ships moving at same time and colonize a planet will have other msg's pop up for colonizers or survey ships. Rather small irritation but didn't happen before 4d to me.
In effect screen comes up to colonize and then pre-empted by other screen msg, colonization, explore anomoly, or trade msg. have to click OK or such and back to colonize .. so somethin seems to have changed in priority or pre-empt routine here

#1. I've seen that too. I've always assumed that it was real - the Torians are spending down their cash reserves and building something really big and expensive. Hence the huge production for a few turns.

#9. Can't you leave the UP? Okay, you lose all your trade, but that seems to be just the sort of "penalty" you're aksing for.

re point #9, not really what I'm after, its two points in one really, 1. I don't really like this particular vote - seems to defeat the object isomewhat of a tech victory, and if there must be things like this opting out of individual votes would help. If you opt out of the UP altogether you don't (obviuosly even get to see the activity - good point though, food for thought! Not sure that many UP decisions I participaterd in directly helped me all that much..hmmm

playing against 5 genius a.i's that give all the tech away is what is keeping me alive in the current game. But i agree that there should be a veto mehanism that you would suffer a pretty significant penalty. I'm already paying 8bc a month for starnbases not in my own sectors :(

Steve-

That's exactly what it's there for. Suppose you were on the other end of it - the Yor are head and shoulders above everyone else technologically, and it's only a matter of time before they can crush you and everybody else like a bug. Now, the Drengins come whispering to you in the UP halls - "if we band together, we can outvote the Yor and make them give us a their technology. Then we'll have a fighting chance!"

How would you vote?

Now, reverse the positions of you and the Yor.

I think the point of this is that the aliens want to win too. They are not going to meekly roll over and die when they see you nearing a victory condition - they are going to band together to stop you. The UP is one of the tools they have for that.

One simple option that would probably help is a "Leave UP" button right on the UP Screen. Many of the new UP issues draw a hard line like that, and you may want to take that option instead of suffer whatever the United Planets decided to vote. Does this sound reasonable?

Would at least give the option of leaving rather than giving away all your tech. Giving away all your tech when trying for a tech win is a bit silly. It would be like giving away all your starbases when trying for an influence win.

That would be great Scott, a bit like walking out of the UN.

I take Tom's point, but I would rather have the right to decline to participate in a particular UP decision -and face the consequences, rather than opt out for ever in anticipation of not liking one vote when it comes up. As it's a club (it seems) with members bound by the democratic decisions (fair enough I supose- like the UN) then I guess I would have to leave it if I wasn't prepared to be bound by a decision - except if I was the USA of course ;p

Tom - my response to your comment is fair enough BUT I am really commenting against this particular vote choice rather than against the principle of the UP. If the vote choices are dramatic and challenging - but not game unbalancing or destroying - and I STILL don't like them - then I leave the UP and face the consequences.

By the way what ARE the consequences? (other than not participating in future voting?)

One consequence of leaving the UP is that you give up all your trade. I don't know what happens if the UP votes some sort of ship change and you leave.

thats good, and sensible these are the consequences we should have for such an antisocial withdrawal - thanks

Scott,

I like the "leave the UP" idea for the UP meeting screen. I would also welcome a "If this is passed I will leave the UP" type of "arguement prior to voting" response that would sway the other UP members to vote for/against an issue.

Perhaps a quicker fix to this problem (considering limited time and resources before release) is to tweak the issues.

The problem is that there are now some issues (the tech sharing in particular) which happen instantaneously. Immediate issues which don't negatively hurt a player (such as new planet) are fine, it's just the ones that can seriously hurt a game with no option to veto or leave the UP that need tweaking.
Most issues add rules which if you don't like you can leave the UP at any time. These effect gameplay and are good.

Paul.

PS. I would love to select or try to influence the topic to be voted on!
