The Original GalCiv

Let me tell you- I just happened to visit Tom's Harware.com (which I haven't looked at in probably six months or longer) so imagine my surprise when I see the Threading article and it talks about Galactic Civilizations! I couldn't believe it. My dad use to run os/2 on our computer years ago and Galactic Civilaztions was the only reason I ever found out about that good but doomed OS. Anyway, I loved the original version and can't wait for the new one. I was just wondering if there was any chance of you guys at Stardock putting out the old version (and making in playable on Windows OS)?

Sort of like Galatic Civilization Classic .

I think one of the reasons why we had to wait so long is the original GC does not port well to windows.

Probably the easiest way to do this is to burn yourself a CD ROM that has a bootable OS/2 and a copy of the original GC on it. Then put it in the drive and power up. I suspect Technician's right - if it were easy to port, we'd have had it years ago.

Long time ago' Brad said it was easier to re-write it. Anyway I still feel GC V1 was different from V2/Gold as GC-Win is different. Each had it's good time.

For sure adding all major GC versions (1.08, 2.5, Gold) for OS/2 wouldn't add much to the GC-Win CD-Rom or download. Could be a nice thing for all the OS/2 fans owning a Drengin account.
I mean, download via standard Drengin as files, copy to OS/2 partition and manually unzip.

BTW, I also have the package of the very real precursor of GC V1 called Galactic Emperor (if I remember correctly). Anyone interested? ;)

I wonder if OS/2 would even run on the latest hardware.

If it gets by the P3, P4 class processor then it would likely not properly detect the video card and set the display to VGA mode.

Maybe fun to get it to work.

OS/2 ran fine on my 1.4 GHz Athlon. Graphics card was a Matroc MGA400. Video wouldn't be a problem with SciTech's SNAP. Audio might be.

IBM still upgrades OS/2 (mainly dev.drivers) in a program for enterprises called "eBOSS" where you pay a maint. fee to get upgrades.
OS/2 is hard to die...
...but was also hard to live for it.
I'd say it's a tough guy.

gherardo, do you mean Star Emperor? I have a copy of that.

Instead of colonizing, you sent out ships that caused each system you landed on to "ally" with you, and each system brought with it one tech or ship type it could build. Some of the ship classes were Bulldog and Hero.

Sound like the same game?

TJL1,

I got audio working fine in OS/2 with a Soundblaster Live and Athlon 1.2 GHz. Even Galciv 1.07 worked well. :D
