Connection not required for turinium?

I have to connect everything else to get the resources, why don't I have to for turinium?  There were two nodes on the map that I had no hope of connecting for a long time to come.  I took them anyway simply to deny them to the AI--and got critical mass before I had any encounter with half the AIs other than in taking those nodes.

That's right The Turinium works like your Nexus. When your Nexus is destroyd it change to a Turinium node. So when the Turinium node has resources around, it's nice, when you can took it, because you collect then the resources over the Turinium node. But i think it works only for the resources who conectet direct to the turinium node. The other nodes must conect to your Nexus.
