Trek 2009 had no sound in space too for a moment in the Kelvin battle scene when people got sucked out into space they were screaming until the got out in vacuum. Then "silence". There were a few silent phaser blasts in that scene too. So that was a nice compromise. The only reason there is "sound in space" at all in these movies is because they would be "uninteresting" otherwise. People associate everything with sound. You see a big explosion you expect to hear a big BOOM.

Eve online had a nice compromise too. They acknowledge the fact that there is no sound in space, but inside your capsule the sound of everything outside is "simulated" to enhance your senses.

I am an old school trekkie, and the "this is not Star Trek, because it doesn't have this, or that" is getting really tired. It is obvious that JJ trek is NOT intended to please old school fans. 20 years from now when someone else remakes Trek again the JJ fans will do the exact same bitching you all are doing right now.

I enjoyed watching Star Trek TOS although I don't consider myself a fan.  It was one of the best sci fi series on TV at the time.  I also enjoyed TNG but I never got into the Trek spin off series.

I thought the first movie was kinda crappy.  Too little plot, too many views of the new Enterprise.  I loved the second one though!  Ricardo Montalban was phenomenal!

I also enjoyed the new Star Trek movie.  Sure, it's different from the series.  Sure, it's more action than acting.  You have to remember that they are created for today's theater goers.  The ones that walk around with their faces glued to their iPhones, android phones, tablets Etc..  If nothing happens in a movie for over 30 seconds, they get bored.

I don't compare these movies with the older movies or the series.  I take them for what they are.  A new version using the same characters.  (Names and job titles at least)

I have yet to see Into Darkness. (waiting for the rush to die down) But from the clips I've seen it looks to be as entertaining as the first one.

It's freaking BIG. Over 2000 meters according to the official scale charts. Which makes it bigger than the galaxy, and sovereign class's. I find the up-scale of the reboot ship kind of ridiculous too. Still looked tiny compared to the latest "ubership" it is up against.

Just saw the movie. Yea it is kinda been there, done that, However it was quite enjoyable. As good as 2009 IMO.

The Big-E (though it looked very small compared to the black knight). Got its ass royally handed to it on a silver platter without firing a single shot (Damn Uberships). Least technobabble didnt save the day this time.

Opps, I should have said over 2000 ft. The "Black Knight" is the size of a borg cube!

There is preparedness and there is complacency. No matter whether you are a leading power or not relying on a defensive perimeter alone without backup IMO is nothing short of arrogance, thinking no one in their right mind would attack you. Having a dedicated home fleet separate from those you'd send off anywhere would insure adequate protection in case of just such an attack. Had that extra defensive line been in place the attack might have been thwarted. It would have made for one helluva space battle though, that's for sure. Defeating the home fleet and proceeding with the attack...high drama to say the least. 

BTW - That's first time I saw the Vengeance, Where'd that come from?

Just finished watching it and still have no idea what the 'into darkness' is all about...

except that he didn't...so the 'into darkness' was averted?!? Still doesn't make sense.

at dark times, the destruction of Vulcan, the revival of khan in uncertain times and they needed a warrior to combat evil & keep the Klingons contained because there is no longer support from the Vulcans.

Oh hell! That means they will have to do a re-imagined Kor, Kang, and Koloth for the 3rd move!

Did anyone find else something wrong with the big-e caught in earths gravity when it was damn near in lunar orbit?! Shouldn't it have crashed on the Moon instead?! LOL With no power it made dead stop trip from the moon to the earth in 5 minutes.

It's obvious we are Trek fans, with the mountains of information we have at our fingertips and limitless imagination, plot holes the size of "The Doomsday Device" that can navigate safely through unfortunately do happen. I explained how Harrison/Khan look's the way he does because of Section 31 covert operandi, so let's just say that the ships were coasting at a high speed when they came out of warp. 

If there is a next time for JJ to direct the next one, they need to hire the Okuda's,(Trek fans know who they are), as technical advisors. Stuff can still look cool when logic supports it, when it doesn't it. We find ourselves talking about it like now...
