I'm not much of a modder myself, but I've been kicking around an idea and so I'd like to get some input as to it's practicality, and if anybody else thinks it would be a fun addition.
While I appreciate the idea of structures orbiting a planet for being not only logical but also more sensible for the gameplay, I must admit I've been regretting that it seems all the space on the planet itself is wasted. I remember back when I managed to get 7DS working finding a planet type called "Relic", which sometimes would have a status effect which would randomly turn on a shield generator.
This got me thinking. Now while granted the planet does have certain interactions and impacts other then credit sources- the ability to build bomb shelters somewhere down there, and the graphics of all the civilian craft skimming the surface, the planet doesn't do much. However, in most instances I can think of, all that space could be a valuable strategic point. If I can build bomb shelters via upgrading my planet, shouldn't I be able to build other types of defenses? If not separate structures meant to be mounted on the surface, the option to mount structures on the planet itself. It would certainly add more variety, I think.
While I had been thinking through this, I realized that I can't take it too far. Sins is an incredible game meant to be in space. I'm sure we could all cook up some ground warfare mods to spice things up, but I don't trust myself to turn that into anything other then at best, a hoop to jump through tacked onto an already perfect system. You might say a boring minigame in between the real game itself. However, I do think I could do something with it in between. Actually, this turned into solution to a problem I had with the game in the first place- that annoying thing where since some saps got a freaking tv station somewhere, the Vasari empire can't invade a planet and take control. I bombed their entire population anyway. LAME. D< (I've always been of the opinion that it shouldn't matter what the public opinion of my empire is anyhow, I've got a big ship, AND YOU WILL LIKE IT. Hmph. Grumble Grumble. Point after all this rambling- I think there should be an option to land ground forces on a planet. No, not zoom into a while different dimension, but just as I can land "settlers" (because of the issue I have with planets I mentioned, I really consider "colonizing" putting a red circle above it and adjusting my resource rates appropriately) and I can bomb, I think there should be a similar way to have a military coop. Maybe once a planet has been un-colonized, either a new ship or a capitol ship could land forces which would slowly negate the effects of the media hubs nearby long enough to colonize.
So. Feedback. I demand you comply, lest I land my imaginary forces on your planet, AND THEN DESTROY THAT DERNED TV STATION.
