You might not be able to answer this question, but were they German by chance?  Seems like 9 of 10 german gamers only do comp stomps.  Usually they are password protected, but if you enter the game via the chat channel, most are willing to let you join.  I do it from time to time and have a lot of fun.  Oh and they do enjoy having someone who is "skilled" with them . 

So yeah it is a little funny (no arguement there), but comp stomps can be fun once in a while.  A lot of them are at the stage when I was at before playing online much.  Helpful hints like how one ship can counter another are well recieved.
