Edit: I've been informed there's already a Freepsace mod project, but I have something a little different in mind. If anyone is able to answer my quick questions, it would be greatly appreciated.
I've just started working on modeling some ships from the Freespace universe to use in Sins. If I have some credible success with modeling the ships, I might turn it into a full-fledged mod. So here's what I was thinking: obviously, the size of everything should be scaled up while the number of total ships will be scaled down quite a bit. It would be a bit more focused on epic battles between large ships than the strikecraft counter of the actual Freespace game, but I have some ideas to still make the strikecraft interesting. I was thinking of making anything cruiser size and above considered by Sins to be a capital ship, since each race has a limited number of ships of that size. For example, Terrans would use Aeolus cruiser, Deimos corvette, Orion destroyer, Hecate destroyer, and the Colossus.
Fighters and bombers would be small frigates with strikecraft physics enabled, with bombers posing a threat to larger ships with potent anti-capship missiles, and with fighters loaded with lasers and missiles designed to shoot down the bombers.
Question for more experienced modders out there: could the capital ships be given the ability to contruct extra fighters and bombers, to mimic the fact that they carry multiple wings ( meaning they're essentially floating frig factories )? I suppose that if that isn't possible I'll just have to make abilities that can spawn the craft, with AM regen disabled for limited use, but that would limit the types of strikecraft and I'd really like to have all of us Freespacers' favorites included ( or just have the corvettes limited to heavy assault, at most, while destroyers can field bombers ).
Also, since there really wouldn't be any use for Sins' actual "strikecraft," could I possibly make the bomber frigates have targetable bombs, in the form of suicide strikecraft? I know the game has the potential for suicide ships, in the form of the Advent scout, but I have no idea if that could be applied to a strikecraft type. Even if it could, I'm aware that, being an ability used by a seperate entity than the "firing" ship, the "warhead" may just go off and do its own thing. Obviously the "warheads" would be easily shot down by capital ships that are not otherwise engaged, but would do a colossal amount of damage if they were to impact.
Other than that, thoughts/opinions?
